The chachalaca has a very long tail tipped with white and short, rounded wings. They have very strong legs which carry them quickly through the underbrush. Despite their size and raucous manner, the chachalaca can be very secretive and difficult to find at times, especially during the breeding season.


They are large in size, approximately two-feet-long. The plain chachalaca is dark gray-brown above and a richer buffy brown below.
