Benjamin Oliver Hicks

Benjamin Hicks was born on Dec. 8, 1838 or 1839 at Four Corners, Rhode Island and died on Nov. 16, 1887 at Brownsville. Was married to Annette Impey, Steven Powers' daughter.

It was Ben Hick's cook, Rafael Moreno, who suggested to Sam Robertson that the name of the town be changed to "San Benito" to honor his former boss, Ben Hicks. Oliver Hicks, his son, supervised getting the townsite cleared and sold 13000 acres of the Powers estate to Sam Robertson for the new townsite.

E. F. Rowson

Original investor of the San Benito Land & Water Co. He owned real estate in Louisiana and was a member of the Houston real estate firm of Swanson & Co., id. He also started the Indiana Co-Operative Canal Co. on land situated approximately one and one-half miles east of Brownsville in Oct. 1907 and by 1909, the company irrigated 12,000 acres.

R.L Batts

Robert Lynn Batts was an original investor of the San Benito Land & Water Co. He was born Nov. 1, 1864, at Bastrop, Texas. He studied law at the Uni. of Texas, and was licensed in 1886. In 1891, he was appointed Assistant Attorney General of the State of Texas. From 1898 to 1901, he was a professor at the Uni. of Texas. He was in private practice from 1901 until 1914, when he was appointed Special Assistant U.S. Attorney General. In 1917, he was appointed Judge of the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. He resigned in 1919, to become general counsel for Gulf Petroleum C. He was appointed to the Uni. of Texas Board of Regents in 1927, of which he served as Chairman of the board 1930-1933. He also authored several legal texts. He died in Austin on May 19, 1935.

W. H. Stenger

Stenger was an original investor of the San Benito Land & Water Co. He was associated with the Heywood Brothers in their earlier ventures, had made a fortune in the Heywood's Jennings field, and had put in the water works system at For Brown.

John Reagan

John Reagan was the Texas-born postmaster general of the Cenfederacy. Under Reagan, the Confederate States Post Office Department was the only governmental agency that operated in the black.

Dick Dowling

Dick Dowling was a Confederate officer and hero who defeated the Union fleet at Sabine Pass. That ruined Union plans to cut Texas off from the Trans-Mississippi region.

Frances

Frances was Steven Power's daughter, married to James L. Landrum. She was born on April 15, 1867 in Brownsville and died on Feb. 1, 1908 in San Antonio.

Spears

Mr. Spears was a director of the San Benito Railroad.
