Ben McCulloch, a veteran of San Jacinto, organized a company of Texas Rangers during the Mexican War. Several Texas Rangers were recognized for their leadership and bravery in the war. Ben McCulloch, Jack Hays, John "Rip" Ford, Samuel Walker, and William A.A. "Bigfoot" Wallace became heroes to their troops and to many of the people of Texas.
