A cooperative of one hundred farmers was formed in 1970. Each grower/ member pledged funding and cropland toward the goal of planting sugarcane, constructing a sugar mill, purchasing necessary equipment, and hiring qualified personnel. Construction of the mill was completed in 1973 at a cost of $28,000,000 and harvesting began in December, 1973.
