From Charles M.
Robinson, III, A History of San
Benito,
"The first school in San Benito opened December 7,
1907, for a six months' term in a little one-room
building at 340 North Travis Street. There were 48
pupils enrolled during the term, representing five
nationalities: Americans, non-English speaking
Germans, Bohemians, Spaniards, and Mexicans.
"
"The Escuela
Guadalupe, a parochial school, was opened in 1912.
Many Spanish-speaking residents received their only
education at the school, under the direction of
Mrs. Carmen Martinez. The school remained at the
intersection of the Expressway frontage and Corral
Street until 1978, when all but the front porch was
demolished."
