The San Benito and Rio Grande Valley Railroad The initial land rush had tapered off. Land located some distance from railroad packing sheds attracted few buyers because of the long haul with teams over often muddy roads. Robertson organized and got financial backing for the San Benito & Rio Grande Railroad, nicknamed the "Spiderweb." The feeder railway, later absorbed by the Gulf Coast Lines, wound over 200 miles through Valley farmland, making shipping facilities easily accessible. Next to the coming of the railroad in 1904, the Spiderweb made the greatest contribution to Valley development. |
