A long time ago it is said that an image of a woman appeared to Juan Diego, a peasant Indian, in a small village in Mexico. The image kept telling him a church had to be built for the people in the village. He went to speak with the priest, but the priest did not believe him. The image appeared more and more to Juan Diego. He went to the priest again, and the priest said for him to bring proof. The image appeared on Juan Diego's vest, and she told him to show the priest. The priest said he wanted more proof. At this time it was winter. The image gave him red roses, and he took them to the priest. Finally the priest believed him because there were no red roses on the bushes in winter. A shrine was built, and the village people adored the image, the Virgin of Guadalupe. It is because of this story that our Shrine to the Virgin of Guadalupe in the mid Valley was built.
