Folklore of the Rio Grande Valley

La Llorona

As told to: Joseph Reza

by: Justino and Enriqueta Reza

Once a woman could not bear the sound of her children's crying. She became so frustrated she pushed her children into the Rio Grande (or Resaca) where the children drowned. Now she weeps for her children as she wanders the shore looking for them. Children are warned not to play near the water's edge because "La Llorona" might come and push them in or take them to replace her lost children.
