Folklore of the Rio GrandeValley

Don Pedrito was an authentic faith healer of the past era, who played an important role in the society of his time. He was well known in South Texas and many people went to him for help and advice. Don Pedrito Jaramillo was given the gift of curing people. He was given the name "Benefactor of Humanity." His gift was to help those who were sick. It is believed that his gift was given to him after he was thrown off of his horse. During this event he broke his nose and when he was returning home his pain went away. Immediately thereafter he heard a voice say "From now on you will cure IN MY NAME." In 1881 he moved to Falfurrias because his mother had just died. There he cured people with the first prescription that came to mind; sometimes people even requested prescriptions by mail. His prescriptions were very inexpensive, and mainly covered the ingredients. At the time, there were few doctors in the Valley. The faith healers used their knowledge to help the sick. There is no doubt that Don Pedrito had faith. Don Pedrito was also a psychic. He would tell people what was ailing them before they could tell him. He was also a person whom friends consulted on business ventures. Jose Lozano of Concepcion wouldn't lay down a bet without consulting Don Pedrito. One day, he agreed to race his horse and he consulted his friend Don Pedrito. He said "There will be no race." The day of the race, the owners couldn't agree on a length and the bet was called off. Another example is that Don Juan Garcia had to appear in court, but every time he rode off he was confronted by a rattlesnake. This happened five times in succession. He tried to kill the snake, but it disappeared. He consulted Don Pedrito, and Don Pedrito advised him to go back. Don Juan Garcia ignored the advice and when he returned, his house was burned, his son was kidnapped, and they were asking a $25,000 ransom.

In another incident, a young lady named Linda was disgusted over the fact that her complexion was so dark. Don Pedrito told her to cover her face with mud from the barn; however, she didn't have much faith so she only covered half of her face. The remedy worked. The following night she covered the other half of her face, but it did not work. She went back to Don Pedrito and complained that half of her face was still dark. Don Pedrito told her to put the mud all over her face and it would all be the same color. The following morning her face was dark on both sides just as it had been before.

Mr. and Mrs. Salvador Garcia had been married for ten years and had no children. Finally the couple decided to go seek advice from the wonderful Don Pedrito. He told Mrs.Garcia to drink a glass of water before going to bed and in nine to ten months she would have three children. Indeed in nine months she gave birth to three baby boys.

Don Pedrito died on July 2, 1907. His fame has continued to grow since his death. A chapel surrounds his tomb in Los Olmos and thousands of people visit it every year

People still believe all of this was given to him in the name of GOD!!!
